Massage for Mental Health - The Process

Step 1:

During the initial consultation we will go over your medical history which will include accidents, injuries, illnesses, medications, etc.  We will also discuss what it is that you would like to achieve from your sessions with Attune to You.  If you would like, you can write down any questions or thoughts on the subject and we will go over them. Things to think about: What is my goal? How can I achieve these goals? What will I need to do? What makes me uncomfortable? Also think about what makes you feel safe.  Feeling safe will be very important in order to make progress.

Step 2:

After determining your goals, and answering any questions you might have, we will discuss your level of comfort with hands on work.  If in the first few sessions you are only comfortable with hands on work to one or two areas of the body then we will start there.  If you find that you are not comfortable with touch at all then I will guide you through easy self massage and breath work until you are ready to move in to hands on work.  Not everyone is the same so while one person may see progress in a few days another may not see progress for a few weeks.  I will also evaluate your current level of stress.  Reducing stress will be very important throughout this process.  Anytime you feel your stress levels increasing do not hesitate to speak up.

Step 3:

Following your evaluation we will begin the hands on massage or guided session.  Depending on your needs we may begin with gentle Energy Therapy or Swedish massage. Once the massage has concluded we will discuss massage frequency, useful techniques that may benefit you in the next session, and post care suggestions.

Step 4:

Are we getting results? That is the question we will discuss after each session.  If we are not seeing any results then we will discuss the possibility of needing a more detailed medical evaluation with another healthcare professional. If we have made progress or have reached your original goal then we will discuss any other conditions you would like to address or move into a maintenance plan to keep you healthy and happy.
